INTERA is hiring a Principal Geochemist to primarily lead geochemical modeling efforts in support of performance assessment for a nuclear waste isolation site. This position will likely encompass geochemical modeling support for other projects as well. This is primarily an office-based position but may require travel to the site office and/or fieldwork for other project support tasks. This position will report to our Albuquerque, New Mexico, office.
We are looking for someone with solid fundamentals in geochemical principles, proven experience in PHREEQC, and experience with Geochemist’s Workbench and EQ3/6 is desirable. Responsibilities
In this role, you will be primarily contributing to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, which involves supporting and working with our client’s multidisciplinary team of scientists. As part of the team, we will be counting on you to plan for the long-term performance assessment requirements that are needed for future site license compliance. In addition to geochemical modeling responsibilities, you should be prepared to contribute to data collection campaigns, analyze site data, author reports, develop presentations, and contribute to the scientific approaches that we develop and deliver to our clients. On other projects, your role may include contributing to highly technical work plans or studies for complex projects, leading teams of personnel to conduct field and office work, and providing subject matter expertise on other projects. There may also be opportunities to support other waste isolation sites and our water resources, mining, environmental, and carbon capture lines of business.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in geochemistry
- 20+ years of applicable geochemical modeling experience at the WIPP site
- Demonstrated experience with geochemical modeling software, including PHREEQC or similar
- Efficient decision-making ability
- Clear, well-rounded communication skills and the ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationships
- Excellent writing and presentation skills
- Ability to collaborate across diverse, multidisciplinary teams
- Adept planning, time management, and organization skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in geology
- Experience with statistical concepts and statistical software
- Knowledge of or experience with Geochemist Workbench and EQ3/6
