INTERA Incorporated is seeking a motivated GIS Intern to join our team of geoscience and engineering professionals in our Sacramento, California, office for Summer 2025! This is a full-time (40 hours/week), paid internship based in our Midtown Sacramento office. We anticipate the intern will work in person 3-5 days per week, with the first few weeks expected to be 5 days per week in-office for onboarding and collaboration. After that, a hybrid schedule with remote work on Mondays and/or Fridays may be available based on performance and project needs.

Internship Description
In this 10-week program, our GIS Intern will work closely with INTERA scientists and engineers to support GIS standardization and mapping tasks. A key responsibility of this position is to develop and implement standardized symbology and professional templates to ensure consistency across all GIS work in California. Tasks will include:
- Creating standard symbology for commonly used features
- Developing a repository of common layers, shapefiles, and feature classes
- Designing project and layout templates to enhance efficiency and uniformity in GIS deliverables
- Assisting with map production and other GIS-related tasks as needed
This internship will be mentored by an experienced water resources engineer and offers an opportunity to take ownership of a meaningful initiative that will streamline GIS work across INTERA’s California projects. Additionally, the intern will gain exposure to a variety of water resource planning, groundwater management, and water supply development projects throughout California.
Required Qualifications
- Currently working towards a college degree in geography, hydrology, environmental science and management, civil and environmental engineering, or a related field with coursework or experience in GIS
- Strong proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and experience developing symbology, templates, and geospatial data repositories
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in organizing GIS workflows
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with GIS standardization, cartographic design, or data management
- Familiarity with geodatabases and version control for GIS data
- Experience with python scripting and GitHub
- Experience working with water resources, environmental, or engineering-related GIS datasets
Expected Salary Range: $18–$25 per hour
