INTERA Geosciences Pty Ltd is seeking a highly experienced and driven Senior / Principal Hydrogeologist to lead and deliver innovative hydrogeological solutions across mining, water resources, and environmental consulting sectors. This pivotal leadership role offers the opportunity to guide a talented technical team, shape strategic direction, and contribute to the growth and success of a global geoscience consulting firm.  This position is located in Perth, WA.

About the Role

As a Senior / Principal Hydrogeologist, you will oversee multidisciplinary projects from inception to completion, providing technical expertise and strategic input while supporting the development of junior staff. This role also incorporates advanced geological and hydrogeological tasks aligned with ANZSCO classifications, including field-based exploration, geophysical surveying, and the study of geological formations and natural processes. You will work closely with our US-based leadership team, clients, and stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and impactful solutions.

You bring a solid technical foundation in hydrogeology, environmental science, or engineering, along with a strong track record of managing projects and leading teams within a consulting environment. Known for your commercial acumen and client-focused approach, you balance scientific rigour with strategic thinking. With a collaborative leadership style, you are adept at mentoring junior professionals and building trusted relationships with stakeholders. Your deep understanding of geological and hydrogeological systems drives your passion for applying technical insights to solve complex environmental and resource challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership & Strategy

  • Collaborate with corporate leadership to develop and execute growth strategies.
  • Lead business development initiatives and manage day-to-day operations.
  • Monitor and achieve financial and performance metrics.

Project Management & Delivery

  • Lead and manage complex hydrogeological investigations and assessments.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams and ensure timely, quality project outcomes.
  • Oversee budgets, timelines, and client communications.

Technical Oversight & Innovation

  • Provide senior technical guidance on modelling and fieldwork methodologies.
  • Champion innovation in hydrogeological practices and modelling tools.
  • Support INTERA’s research and development initiatives.

Groundwater Assessment & Modelling

  • Design and implement field investigations and conceptual models.
  • Conduct aquifer testing, water quality analysis, and well performance evaluations.
  • Build and calibrate numerical models (e.g. MODFLOW, FEFLOW) for various applications.

Environmental Compliance & Water Resources

  • Ensure regulatory compliance in groundwater impact assessments.
  • Support development of water supply and infrastructure strategies.
  • Contribute to environmental approvals and permitting processes.

Mentoring & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop junior staff through knowledge sharing and training.
  • Promote a collaborative, technically rigorous, and supportive team culture.

Strategic & Organisational Contribution

  • Provide strategic insight into service development and client engagement.
  • Contribute to proposals, tenders, and project planning.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Geoscience, Environmental Science, or related field (PhD advantageous).
  • 15+ years of professional experience in hydrogeology or groundwater consulting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
  • Proven track record in delivering complex projects and managing client relationships.
  • Advanced knowledge of groundwater flow, chemistry, and contaminant transport.
  • Strong proficiency in hydrogeological software (MODFLOW, FEFLOW, PHREEQC, Leapfrog, Surfer, etc.).
  • Experience with decision-support modelling, uncertainty analysis, and system optimisation.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Thorough understanding of Australian environmental regulations and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience in the mining, water resources or environmental consulting sectors are highly regarded.
