INTERA is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Editor to join our growing and collaborative editing team. This role will be based in our Austin, Texas office where you will primarily support our Mining and Environmental Line of Business. The Technical Editor will review deliverable documents, proposals, letter reports, work plans, scopes of work, quarterly reports, annual reports, and closure reports for multiple INTERA projects and sites. As a result, you will work closely with INTERA’s technical staff and project managers at many stages of document development, finalization, and delivery. Our Technical Editors regularly look for new ways to improve efficiency and standardization in the creation, review process, and delivery of INTERA’s documents.
Additionally, the Technical Editor role is quite flexible with a variety of opportunities to assist the corporate marketing group or the office managers with tasks and documents as well. Responsibilities
In addition to the information listed above, the Technical Editor will review and provide final formatting of all attachments (Tables, Figures, and Appendices) and compile them into a document. Technical Editors are occasionally responsible for delivering the final document in hard copy by the printing, binding, and shipping of the document, or electronic delivery on CD or via document upload links. The Technical Editor will assist project managers and other technical staff to address last-minute revisions and issues related to the document and client feedback. At times there may be multiple project needs for different project managers, so being responsive and able to manage one’s own workflow is essential. Some projects will require same-day service, and many require a turnaround within a few business days.
Our Austin, Texas office maintains core in-office hours Tuesday through Thursday with flexible remote work on Mondays and Fridays. Responsibilities of the Technical Editor include:
- Provide technical editing of written materials (including letters, technical memos, presentation materials, and quarterly, annual, and semiannual reports)
- Ensure references are correct and complete. Assist with developing missing reference entries
- Flag questionable content and unclear phrases
- Format tables and figures according to INTERA’s standards
- Compile final PDFs and proofread submissions to ensure the highest standard of accuracy and polish
- Build custom templates for some projects
- Print, bind, and ship documents in standardized style and form including a high level of professional execution; often working under very short deadlines
- QA/QC of tables or figures, as needed
Required Qualifications
- High-level proficiency in English grammar and mechanics
- High-level proficiency in Microsoft Word, including advanced formatting of different document sections, using and troubleshooting cross-references, adding or fixing tables of contents and header/footer issues
- Moderate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, or other Microsoft products/tools
- Moderate proficiency in Adobe Acrobat, to include combining multiple documents, fixing or adding bookmarks, OCR, checking document accessibility/compliance
- A “customer service” mindset when working with technical staff and project managers. You will have a lot of services to offer them and you may need to market yourself to other offices and remote employees to ensure they know what you can do.
- The ability to manage competing deadlines and communicate progress. The technical editor often deals with the end stages of projects, usually near the deadline for delivery and with some degree of pressure, so communicating professionally and frequently will be key to success.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field
- Previous experience as a technical editor
- An interest or background in STEM concepts and topics
- Experience working with remote co-workers and using Teams or other video conferencing tools when communicating with coworkers
- Experience with printing large documents and packaging in 3-ring, comb, or spiral binding
Final candidates for this position will be asked to come into the office for part of a day to complete a task demonstrating some of the skills needed and for interviews with several project managers.
